Melanoma Prevention Tips

melanoma stomach Melanoma Prevention TipsMelanoma is a very serious and dangerous type of skin cancer that begins in melanocyte skin cells, the cells that produce melanin. You may know that melanin gives skin its color and when melanocytes are exposed to sunlight tanning occurs. These cells also protect the deeper layers of skin from being damaged ultraviolet rays. However, when these cells are exposed to too much sunlight or UV rays they can begin to multiply and grow abnormally and may become cancerous. Fortunately, while melanoma is the most deadly skin cancer, it is also easily preventable. Here are some tips for keeping your skin healthy in the sunny summer months.

  • Wear cover-ups, wide-brimmed hats, and tightly woven, dark fabrics in the sun
  • Apply a sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 and reapply every few hours
  • Perform routine self-examinations and get an annual head-to-toe skin check from your dermatologist
  • Choose a moisturizer or mineral makeup with an SPF
    of 15+
  • Avoid tanning salons and tanning beds
  • Keep children 6 months and younger out of the sun when
    possible
  • Limit your sun exposure between the hours of 10am and 4pm
  • Don’t forget to apply sunscreen even when it’s not sunny out
